Anonymous asked: Tom, with the movies getting more and more popular I've noticed a trend in the comics that leads to two possibilities, both of which are rather frightening: 1) your writers can't be bothered to develop original ideas and just copy the movies, or 2) you think readers are so stupid that they won't be able to tell the difference between the events of the movies and the books, so the books must be changed to be more in line with the films.
A.) Anyone who thinks that the real Cap and Thor won’t be back by the time ‘Civil War’ and ‘Ragnarok’ hit theaters are kidding themselves. Look at Superior Spider-Man; Peter Parker was back with a reboot just in time for ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′.
B.) There are numerous examples of Marvel changing characters to better connect to the movies. Anyone remember when Spider-Man had organic webbing way back when? Just recently (and this sounds ridiculous when you say it like this) classic Nick Fury was replaced by his son, who looks like Samuel L. Jackson and is also called Nick Fury. And of course there’s the hullabaloo with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver no longer being Magneto’s children because they’re not mutants in the Avengers film.
C.) Let’s not forget how properties that Marvel owns the film rights to – Guardians of the Galaxy, Inhumans, etc – are pushed to the forefront while properties owned by other companies – X-Men, Fantastic Four – are being pushed to the curb.
I’d be very surprised if the new Marvel Universe post-Secret Wars isn’t even more accommodated to align with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
